Microsoft needs to over come Google OS ‘Chrome’
Google has been the king of Internet for sometime & would remain the king of Internet with their huge popularity around the world. Their Open source products are striking Microsoft’s market in a sharp way.
With Google’s latest blog clearly stating that they are to introduce Open source Operating system by the name of ‘Chrome‘. I think this is going to hurt Microsoft big time. An Operating System like ‘Windows’ is something every person in the world is comfortable with. However, anything that comes free is hugely appreciated & welcomed.
We must see how Google’s Chrome OS will overcome the most popular OS in the world ‘Windows’. With Google, already giving a tough competition by releasing their online version of Google Docs. Even before Microsoft is about to start their own online version of Office @ solid domain – http://www.office.com , they will face another major blow and have to counter attack the Google’s new Open source OS if they want to keep up in race. According to me, this is going to be a hot topic when Google actually launches their OS.
However, What I can see right now is Google has done nothing special regarding most of their products. Infact, if you look at most popular products released by Google are copied ideas of Microsoft & copied products of Microsoft – Whether its the Microsoft Office (Google Docs), their search (Google Search) itself & now this Google’s OS which probably going to be copied ideas from Microsoft & other Operating systems. Google is not just trying to be their own but, they are trying to occupy the other giants in Internet by copied concepts & launching them as Open source. This is very sensitive issue for all the other giants especially Microsoft because whatever Google is trying to do is affecting Microsoft’s business and in a big way.
One strong point about Microsoft is their professional approach to the release of their products and none of their products were copied concepts. This makes Google’s products look like pirated version of Microsoft’s products to the techy people. That makes it pretty clear that Original products will continue to have their own stand as they are the ‘creators’ without which, there wont be ‘pirated copies’. Without Microsoft, there would not have been Google. I think everyone agrees to this.
Google’s Chrome browser had serious flaws like collecting information from users directly affecting the user’s privacy. If Chrome Operating System has some similar plans like that, I bet its gonna be another flop. Even though, an Opensource Operating System will be huge hit amoung the masses. Another interesting thing about Google is their ‘simplicity’, this is really good in some cases whether you take example of their own home page – http://www.google.com which is pretty simple & cool.
But, this simplicity has been the case even with their products. This makes Google’s products more ‘basic’ than advanced. My point here is whether Google’s new OS – Chrome can in someway have something ‘Advanced’ features especially when you consider techy people & even Gaming users who need more performance and complexity. (Complexity – advanced features :p)
Verdict: Though Google has managed to get huge mass popularity with these open source products, they are yet to gain popularity from the techy people. And this is going to be pretty serious thing in the days to come as there are more techy people born everyday.
Regarding Microsoft: I don’t think Microsoft would not just sit & crumble. They will wait for the right time, wait for the opposition to fall before they make their special product appearances. Any counter attack products that will be launched in this ‘Google’ era would only make Microsoft very weak. Instead, if Microsoft focuses on their original base ‘Windows’ & their own products which have their own impact in this world of web….would make them more professional & standout from its competitors. I personally think a professional organization like Microsoft must not think ‘Google’ as competitor. It should rather remain ‘Potential’ competitor. forever.
I still remember the early days, when Bill gates was here in India & had an interview with Pranob Roy (of NDTV). Gates was asked a question which brought up a sarcastic smile on his face & audience sitting over their mistook for a embrassing smile.
The question was ‘Is Google a major threat to Microsoft’ & Bill gates was quick to laugh at it. He went to say ‘if Google gets money for what people search, why can’t they share some with people’. It’s a genius answer from a genius. I had no clue of what he mean’t & what are his intentions for this particular answer. I could only think Microsoft is special the way they are & they will remain special.
Google, Microsoft should standout on their own. I would rather prefer them to be separate than competitors. Competition may not get creative ideas & creative products in the long run. I know many would laugh at my stupid logic but, as of now, I think competition is not good.
Considering Google’s Chrome Operating System as Nuclear Bomb on Microsoft would only be foolish & too early take. Microsoft has been the original product creator, they know more pros & cons and would easily standout even if Chrome’s launch might affect their financial side.
